How Does Intelligent Speed Assistance Work in Virginia?

Under Virginia HB2096, effective July 1, 2026, ISA devices may be required for some Virginia drivers who accumulate high demerit-point totals on their license, or who are convicted of certain serious speeding offenses.

A driver who fails to install an ISA when required can have their license suspended for a time between 60 days and six months, or even more for drivers with previous violations.

Drivers who are required to install an ISA must have it installed by an ISA vendor approved by the State of Virginia. Speed Aware is here to help, with user-friendly ISA devices ready to help you stay compliant on the road.

Which offenses qualify for ISA program enrollment?

A wide range of causes can make you eligible for license suspension under HB2096. These include, but may not be limited to:

Reckless driving
Street racing/exhibition driving
Speeding
Accumulating too many demerit points (through speeding tickets, etc.)

How the ISA program works as an alternative to license suspension

If your license has been suspended or is about to be suspended under HB 2096, you may be able to install an ISA to maintain your driving privileges. Ask your attorney or monitoring authority for more information.
